Distribuzione e habitat
Il genere è probabilmente mwewcosmopolitacite-ref-fao-2-0[2] almeno nelle latitudini da temperate a subpolaricite-ref-young-3-0[3]; la scarsità di reperti noti non permette però di ricostruire in maniera completa il suo mwhaareale. Sembra che le varie specie abbiano areali separati ed isolati geograficamente, cosa piuttosto rara per gli organismi abissali. Sono specie di acque profonde presenti nelle zone mwhqbatipelagica e mwhgabissopelagica. Le catture note sono avvenute tra i 1550 e i 3431 metri di profonditàcite-ref-fao-2-1[2].
Descrizione
Sono cefalopodi piuttosto piccolicite-ref-fao-2-2[2] di consistenza gelatinosacite-ref-roper-4-0[4]. Il mantello è corto e largocite-ref-fao-2-3[2], termina a punta dalla parte posteriorecite-ref-roper-4-1[4]. Le pinne sono grandi, di forma rotondeggiante e si uniscono oltre la punta posteriore del mantello. Gli occhi sono piccoli, infossati nel tegumentocite-ref-fao-2-4[2], a volte comunicanti con l'esterno solamente attraverso un porocite-ref-young-3-1[3]; sull'occhio è presente una peculiare palpebra traslucida denominata pseudocorneacite-ref-fao-2-5[2]cite-ref-young-3-2[3]. La testa e il mantello sono fusi nella parte dorsale. Sulle braccia sono presenti da 2 a 6 serie di ventose; i tentacoli sono molto più spessi delle braccia e la clava tentacolare è stretta. Le ventose sulla clava sono piccole e numerose, disposte irregolarmente. Manca il sacco dell'inchiostro e non sono presenti mwrqfotoforicite-ref-fao-2-6[2].
Sono cefalopodi di piccola taglia: il mantello dell'esemplare più grande noto misura 18,4mwsw cm, tutti gli altri individui conosciuti hanno il mantello di lunghezza inferiore a 5mwta cmcite-ref-fao-2-7[2].
